Sometimes the simplest products are over looked in the excitement of the new, high tech, and glitzy.
Here’s one such item, common and not very glamorous, but very necessary and helpful when you’re on the road – Q-tips cotton swabs.
I always have them in my toiletry bag because they can be used for so many different purposes:
- applying or removing make up
- cleaning up manicure and pedicure smudges
- removing water and sand from ears
- apply topical medication
- cleaning electronics and other gear
- removing something from your eye
- cleaning
- arts and craft
- and lots more
While I buy Q-tips in large quantities, they do have a great travel size or purse pack. It contains 30 swabs, accessible by a flip top, and can easily be packed in your toiletry kit or purse. Best of all, it’s refillable.
The Purse Pack is available for $1.29. All Q-tip products can be purchased at most food, drug, and mass outlet stores.

If your travel take you places known for food and beverage, you’ve probably been tempted to take a few of the goodies home with you. But when your discoveries are wine, olive oil, specialty vinegars, or other liquid items, the decision about packing involves more than a little consideration.
Carryon restrictions will make it nearly impossible for you to carry on these liquid items, so if you plan to take items home, you’ll need to check your luggage.
Generally speaking, liquids with under 24% alcohol are not considered hazardous material, and as such are not subject to a limitation or restriction on what can be in your checked luggage. (NOTE: This is a NOT the same as custom restrictions!) Even if you are bringing back spirits over 24% in alcohol content, you can bring up to five bottles in your checked luggage provided its packaged in a sealable bottle. Over 70% alcohol content (e.g., that tasty 150 proof rum) cannot be transported in your checked bags.
I frequently bring back special bottles of wine that I’ve found, and have had good luck with wrapping and carefully packing bottles into my luggage. But despite my best efforts, the risk of breakage or leakage and the attendant damage, is a real possibility.
Worry about that no longer with BottleWise products, and eliminate the fear of breakage or leakage. Whether it’s wine, olive oil (a frequent purchase of mine), spirits or liqueur, or some other liquid, you can take it with you!
BottleWise is a soft-sided bag that has been specifically designed to keep wine bottles safe in your checked luggage. It comes in a one and two bottle model, and features individually padded sleeves that will protect standard sized wine bottles. For further protection, the sleeves have interior watertight pouches so that if leakage does occur it won’t ruin your clothes.
The BottleWise Bot’lPak has one padded sleeve and comes in black. It sells for $21.95 (quantity discounts available).
The BottleWise Duo is available in black, olive, taupe, and bordeaux. It features two padded sleeves, comes in the same colors and sells for $58.95 (in photo above).
BottleWise products can be purchased online. I haven’t seen them at a local store in my area, but you may want to check at your neighborhood wine shop. I’ll be looking for one before my next wine country trip!
The holidays are going to be here before you know it, and this would make a great gift for any wine loving traveler.

Jump seat bags are great every day bags, as well as well-designed for a carryon tote. They come in a vibrant red or blue, and sport a trend setting retro look.
Plus, they come with some interesting history – the bags are all hand crafted, one-of-a-kind, and made with authentic vintage aircraft textiles. This is the same material that airplane seat covers are made of. Additionally, the lining is out of military jacket flight satin. So these bags have a travel past and present!
The Touring Bag (above) has rounded curves, and plenty of pockets to keep smaller items safe and secure, and your iPod or cell phone handy. It has a zippered closured, complete with a rhinestone airplane charm zipper pull. Long shoulder straps make it comfortable to carry.
The Galley Tote (at left) is deep and roomy, with room for all the necessities you carry, as well as a book, magazine and a little more. Inside you’ll find a zip pocket and a cell phone/multi-purpose pocket, along with outside pockets and pouches.
As I look at these bag, the seashell pattern and colors looks vaguely familiar. I can’t place the airline, but I swear I’ve seen this fabric before. If you know, please leave a comment.
Both bags are available online at Petaline. The Touring bag is $225, and the Galley Tote is $275.

The HelenRae Carry-on Bag was designed by Kate Coughlin, a constantly-traveling consultant. She created the perfect carry-on suitcase that has a variety of features just for women.
Removable Shelves
Inside the bag are two internal shelves that keep your items just where you want them - your sweaters stacked or your shoes in place. If you don’t need the shelves, they are easily removable.
Toiletries Pocket
This plastic-lined pocket is easily accessible from both in and outside the bag. Airport security can easily remove items if necessary and because they are in a separate pocket, you won’t have to worry about spillage onto your other items.
Laptop Pouch
This bag also includes a padded and lined front pouch for your laptop, in case you need to check email or the Internet while traveling. The pouch allows you to safely store your laptop without having to use a separate laptop bag.
The HelenRae Carry-on Bag comes in three color combinations - black with blue piping, black with pink piping and brown with pink piping. The bag is feminine, yet tough and won’t get damaged.
The bag also has wheels for easy mobility, an adjustable handle to six heights, and a removable suiter and hanger.
All of these features, yet it’s still lightweight and carry-on size. Visit HelenRaeLuggage.com to learn more about this bag and order yours today for $195.

There are some things we just don’t want to talk about. . . but should. And offensive bathroom odors, and what to do about them, falls into that category. Yes, we all know it happens, but that doesn’t mean that we want our traveling companions knowing about it.
If you’re traveling with a group of friends or business companions, Just a Drop personal bathroom odor eliminator may be save you from embarrassment.
Just a Drop is a must-pack if you’re going to be sharing bathrooms with a traveling companion. You place a drop or two in the toilet bowl before using the facilities, and it creates a seal of the water’s surface that will trap odors and keep them from escaping into the air. It’s formulated from a natural eucalyptus extract, is biodegradable, and is designed to stop odors on contact, leaving a clean, fresh scent.
You can purchase Just a Drop online in a variety of sizes, from single use packets (18 packets per jar, $12.99 for two jars) to the daily use bottle, small enough to fit into a pocket, yet delivering 400 uses per bottle ($14.99 for two bottles). There’s also a travel size bottle (half the size of the daily use bottle) that sells for $21.99 for six bottles.
This is a practical and useful product, so send the link to this post to all your traveling pals. That way you won’t have to talk about it.
