Pack Wine & Keep it Safe

If your travel take you places known for food and beverage, you’ve probably been tempted to take a few of the goodies home with you.  But when your discoveries are wine, olive oil, specialty vinegars, or other liquid items, the decision about packing involves more than a little consideration.

Carryon restrictions will make it nearly impossible for you to carry on these liquid items, so if you plan to take items home, you’ll need to check your luggage. 

Generally speaking, liquids with under 24% alcohol are not considered hazardous material, and as such are not subject to a limitation or restriction on what can be in your checked luggage.  (NOTE:  This is a NOT the same as custom restrictions!)  Even if you are bringing back spirits over 24% in alcohol content, you can bring up to five bottles in your checked luggage provided its packaged in a sealable bottle.  Over 70% alcohol content (e.g., that tasty 150 proof rum) cannot be transported in your checked bags.

I frequently bring back special bottles of wine that I’ve found, and have had good luck with wrapping and carefully packing bottles into my luggage.  But despite my best efforts, the risk of breakage or leakage and the attendant damage, is a real possibility.
